Summary:

The Corporate Environmental Manager assists upper management and field managers at assigned locations in complying with Company's environmental policy and environmental laws, rules, regulations, and permits. This position acquires or assists in the acquisition and/or modification of environmental permits for assigned locations. The position prepares or assists in the preparation of environmental reports for assigned locations. The Corporate Environmental Manager provides guidance on the selection of monitoring systems and stack testing contractors.

What you'll be contributing:

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Reports directly to the Director of Environmental Affairs and is responsible for leading the environmental performance of their assigned field locations through executing the environmental pillars of Communication, Compliance, and Management of Change.
  • Works directly with managers and staff at assigned field locations to ensure compliance with relevant environmental laws, rules, regulations, and permits.
  • Directs and/or participates in environmental audit programs.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and execution of the Company's environmental policy.
  • Assures each assigned facility prepares and maintains files of all environmental permits and that timely applications for permit renewals and modifications are prepared and submitted.
  • Recommends and supervises the hiring and direction of activities of consultants, lawyers, contractors, lobbyists, and other specialists who provide expertise in matters related to environmental laws, rules, regulations, and permitting
  • Prepares or assists internal and external attorneys in defending the Company through the preparation of responses to environmentally related Notices of Violation or other regulatory enforcement actions and initiatives directed at Company facilities.
  • Monitors and evaluates state and federal rule developments and informs management when new regulations or potential regulatory developments could significantly impact the organization.
  • Assists assigned facilities in the preparation and submission to regulatory agencies of timely reports that are required by law, rule, regulation, or permit. Included are stormwater discharge monitoring reports, air emission inventories, excess emissions reports, periodic CEM and CMS performance reports, annual hazardous waste activity reports, toxic release inventories, or other similar reports. Copies of these reports will be maintained in the Overland Park files.
  • Coordinates with the Vice President - Technical Service regarding stack tests, compliance with applicable regulations, and other matters of common interest. Assists in the preparation of trial/test burn plans and reports.
  • Assures that each plant using waste-derived fuel maintains its RCRA and HWC NESHAP Operating record, CEMS records, correspondence files, and other records or reports required by permit or regulation. Reviews annually and, as required, modifies the RCRA Closure Plans and Closure Cost Estimates for each WDF burning facility. Assists the Assistant General Counsel and the Vice President - Finance with the preparation of annual RCRA financial assurance instruments and reports.
  • Reviews the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan at each assigned facility on an annual basis. Assures that these plans are maintained and reviewed by licensed professional engineers in accordance with the applicable regulations.
  • Assists in the preparation of all new, modified, or renewal RCRA Part B permit applications or other permit applications associated with the use of secondary materials. Maintains in Overland Park the record copy of all original and modified RCRA Part B permit applications. Prepares or assists in the preparation of all Company responses to Notices of Deficiency for RCRA Part B permit applications.
  • Assures the accurate and timely payment of all fees connected with the acquisition and maintenance of environmental permits at assigned facilities.
  • Assists facilities in developing and maintaining procedures to prevent hazards and protect human health and the environment.
  • Maintains active membership in appropriate professional organizations and serves as a Company representative to industry committees, associations, and workgroups. Attends relevant seminars or training sessions. Obtains and maintains appropriate professional certification.
  • Advises upper management and field managers at assigned locations about current and forthcoming environmental issues or regulations.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

To succeed in this position, you will need:

  • Ability to read, write, and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • Minimum 4-Year Bachelor's Degree in environmental studies, engineering, law, or related field
  • Graduate Degree in environmental studies, engineering, law, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in one or a combination of the following work areas:
    • Environmental regulator
    • Environmental consultant
    • Environmental lawyer
    • Environmental engineer in the public or private sector
    • Corporate environmental staff
  • Experience with air pollution, water pollution, solid and hazardous wastes, toxic substances, asbestos, community-right-to-know, SPCC plans, and aboveground and underground storage tanks
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents
  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local regulations regarding the environment
  • Knowledge of applicable general environmental and RCRA permits and permit applications held or submitted by the Company for the assigned facilities.
  • Knowledge of CEM and COM systems at each plant and the QA/QC procedures associated with these units.
  • Ability to make sound independent judgments regularly
  • Uses independent judgment in performing responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to work under general supervision with specified policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Ability to refer to supervisor only when in doubt as to the proper procedure for a specified action.
  • Domestic Travel up to 75%
