Role description:
This engineer will utilize their expertise and technical knowledge of drinking water and wastewater facilities to develop detailed design plans and specification (contract documents) for the implementation of recommended plant and pump station improvements. Expertise in hydraulics and the analysis and design of large-scale pumping, piping and valving systems along with expertise in the selection and design of new and replacement equipment for treatment plant process improvement is a key requirement of the position.
This role serves as key technical support to project managers and account leaders for clients and projects. This engineer will design pumps, piping systems, and treatment equipment for water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations. This engineer will coordinate the design with support disciplines such as structural, architectural, HVAC, electrical, I&C, and other. This engineer will also perform the technical review of shop drawings submittals and answering contractor requests for information on pumps, piping, and process mechanical systems they designed.
This role also includes Project Management responsibilities on specific projects as well as support to other project managers and design and construction teams in the implementation of plant and pump station improvements. This role also assists with specific Business Development activities associated with client interaction, proposal development and interview preparation and delivery, with the primary intent of winning specific project work. This support can take the form of writing technical approaches for proposals, developing slide decks for the technical aspects of competitive interviews and developing work-breakdown structures for project delivery schemes.
Role accountabilities:
Leadership for Project Execution & Delivery - The candidate will provide technical leadership and support project managers and account leaders in the development and execution of water and wastewater process mechanical improvements.
The scope of this work will vary by project, but the focus will be on hydraulic and alternatives analysis, detailed pumping, piping and valving evaluations and selection and design of major process mechanical systems
Knowledge of pumping system hydraulics, valving, piping, vibration, water hammer and anchoring and restraint systems is essential.
Identify requirements for process mechanical equipment and coordinate with other disciplines to design pumping/process equipment systems
Take ownership of design of pumping and process mechanical systems and review of systems during construction
Guide junior engineers in design of pumping and process mechanical systems and review their work
Serve as a Project Manager on specific projects.
Serve as QA/QC lead on certain projects and provide expertise to support regional and national pursuits and projects.
Support design and construction teams in the implementation of process mechanical improvements.
Technical Support for Regional and National Business Development Activities. This technical support includes, but may not be limited to: Face-to-face client interactions, site visits, technical training for client staff, workshop presentations on treatment technology, planning, regulatory frameworks, etc.
Mentoring of Professional Staff. The candidate will engage in active mentorship of peers and young professionals who desire guidance on career development objectives.
This mentoring can take any number of forms, including guidance on preparation and delivery of presentations, papers, workshops, etc., client-facing protocols, and continuing education and training.
The candidate will engage in active membership in state, regional and national professional associations including, Water Environment Federation, and others as appropriate including local affiliates. This engagement entails the delivery of papers, presentations, workshops and webinars at conferences and symposia, participation in technical training workshops and seminars, and involvement in committee leadership as appropriate.
Interact with clients, local and remote Arcadis staff, permitting agencies and other consulting firms in the execution of engineering projects.
Gather information, develop and evaluate alternatives, and prepare engineering reports.
Perform engineering analyses, modeling, and calculations and prepare or support preparation detailed design drawings and specifications.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years of experience in water and wastewater engineering.
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or Chemical engineering.
Professional Engineering license
Key Skills/Attributes
Strong interpersonal abilities for leading and/or working in diverse team environments with staff, clients, and stakeholders.
Technical leadership on capital projects for water and wastewater.
Understanding of water and wastewater process mechanical systems.
Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced proficiency with Office software including Word, Excel and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
MS in related fields preferred.
Experience in water and wastewater. plant hydraulics and the analysis and design of large-scale pumping, piping and valving systems along with expertise in the selection and design of new and replacement equipment for treatment plant process improvement.
