Sr R&D Scientist - X-Ray Crystallographer (Finance)

Honeywell UOP is seeking a qualified individual as an Advanced R&D Scientist in the area of powder X-ray diffraction to join our Advanced Characterization group. This career opportunity is available for an X-ray Diffraction Specialist within our Materials Characterization department, part of UOP's Research & Development organization. The individual should have significant experience in resolving complex materials using crystallographic methods.

The successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role materials structure analysis in support of New Product Development, operating and maintaining multiple X-ray-based instruments, performing both routine and specialized analysis, method development and assembling data analysis summaries. The individual will work on teams and interact and collaborate with engineers and scientists from a broad cross-section of technical fields. For a successful candidate the position will provide an intellectual challenge, increasing responsibility and the ability to work on a variety of complex and challenging materials characterization problems.

LOCATION: Des Plaines, IL

DOMESTIC RELOCATION IS PROVIDED: Must reside 50+ miles from the site location to be eligible for relocation benefits.

The annual base salary range for this position is $110,000-$137,000. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations

The application period for the job is estimated to be 40 days from the job posting date; however, this may be shortened or extended depending on business needs and the availability of qualified candidates.YOU MUST HAVE:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
• At least 2 years' (post graduate) experience with in-depth crystal structure analysis of complex materials using powder X-ray diffraction data
• At least 2 years' (post graduate) experience operating and maintaining X-ray equipment
• At least 2 years' (post graduate) experience in-depth, operational knowledge and experience of multiple XRD techniques and instruments.
• At least 2 years' experience with implementing advanced crystallographic methods (Rietveld Refinement, Pair Distribution Function, In Situ XRD, etc.) to evaluate crystallite size and phase quantitation.

WE VALUE:
• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related field
• A solid understanding of crystallography and diffraction theory.
• Ability to advise, direct and evaluate advances in diffraction technology and X-ray methods
• Experience with a variety of diffraction methods not limited to X-ray (electron, neutron, and atomic PDF, etc.)
• Experience with Rotation electron diffraction (RED) would be highly desirable
• Experience with structure solutions from powder X-ray diffraction data, preferably for materials such as molecular sieves and aluminosilicates
• Experience in X-ray analysis of metallurgical materials
• Experience characterizing a broad variety of materials and sample preparation methods incorporating different techniques (electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, etc.)
• Computer skills including use of dedicated XRD software, Microsoft Office applications and scripting/coding experience
• Ability to design long- and short-term targeted experiments to resolve complex characterization problems
• A highly organized individual able to balance and prioritize a versatile workload
• Strong demonstration of leadership and teamwork abilities
• Solid knowledge on organic and inorganic/materials chemistry
• Excellent communication skills to understand and document project requirements and to effectively convey analysis results to others
• Ideal candidates is high-energy, creative, and a self-starter, who demonstrates technical excellence and is comfortable working in a lab-based team environment
• At least 1 years' experience of computer programming/scripting languages (i.e. Bruker Topas software etc.)KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead and execute advanced powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to support New Product Introduction (NPI), research programs, and manufacturing process improvements, with a focus on phase identification, crystallite size determination, and quantitative phase analysis.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain a suite of X-ray-based instruments (e.g., Bruker D8 Advance, Rigaku SmartLab) ensuring high uptime and data integrity, while troubleshooting equipment issues and coordinating vendor service as needed.
• Develop and refine crystallographic methodologies including Rietveld refinement, Pawley fitting, and Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis for structurally complex materials such as molecular sieves, aluminosilicates, and advanced catalysts.
• Design and implement in situ, variable-temperature, and environmental XRD experiments to monitor phase evolution, crystallinity, and transformation mechanisms under process-relevant conditions.
• Interpret and synthesize multi-modal characterization data by integrating XRD results with complementary techniques such as SEM, TEM, NMR, Raman, and XRF to provide comprehensive material property insights.
• Automate and streamline data reduction workflows through scripting and software customization (e.g., Bruker Topas macros), enhancing throughput and reproducibility of analyses.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D scientists, analytical chemists, and process engineers to influence catalyst formulation, process development, and troubleshooting through detailed structural insights.
• Document experimental procedures, methodologies, and data interpretations in technical reports, presentations, and internal knowledge systems to support intellectual property filings and project deliverables.
• Drive innovation in diffraction technology adoption by evaluating emerging methods (e.g., Rotation Electron Diffraction, synchrotron-based PDF) and integrating new capabilities into the lab.
• Mentor junior scientists and technicians, providing guidance in best practices for sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis.About Us
