ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $93,564.00 - 155,940.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)
ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $115,000.00 - $130,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The Risk Manager will oversee and manage all programming related to claims management, including workers compensation as well as claims for and against the City as a self-insured organization. The Risk Manager will also oversee the process and approval of all insurance policies, including renewals related to operations and property. This position will supervise staff in related areas and report to a director level position. The role is critical in minimizing financial and legal risks while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and policies.

The Risk Manager is not responsible for safety programming or operationalizing mitigation strategies but will work closely with a dedicated Safety Manager and department managers to impact those areas. #INDHP

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Manage and oversee worker's compensation claims, ensuring timely processing, investigation, and resolution.
  • Assess and handle potential liability claims, including property damage, personal injury, and other municipal exposures.
  • Coordinate insurance policy renewals with partners and brokers, ensuring the municipality maintains adequate coverage at competitive rates.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the municipality, insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and legal representatives, to include broker management.
  • Ability to use analytics, identify trends, and communicate applicable data to other departments to develop proactive risk mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend policy updates to reduce liability exposure.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to insurance and worker's compensation.
  • Use industry applicable technologies to manage trends and forecast future impacts on a substantial, city controlled, Risk Fund.
  • Coordinate with dedicated Safety Manager to support strategic, pro-active safety programming across different departments, creating ubiquitous programming and standards where applicable.
  • Provide training and guidance to departments on risk management best practices.
  • Supervise staff in workers compensation, liability claims, and other related areas as assigned. This includes assigning tasks, designating outcomes, professional development, managing conflict, and creating feedback for performance expectations.

Required Education

MinimumPreferredCollege degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees Bachelor's degree in risk management or related field.

Experience Requirements

  • Five or more years of risk management or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Supervisory experience overseeing teams in claims processing, risk assessments, mitigation, and prevention is preferred as well as knowledge of safety programming integration with risk strategies.

Certifications/Licenses/Specialized Training
