Position Summary:
The Rice Office of STEM Engagement (R-STEM) supports and promotes Rice University's wide-ranging efforts to improve K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in all Greater Houston Area school districts. We are proud to serve as the central point of contact for school districts, parents, students, nonprofit organizations, university faculty, and others in the Greater Houston Area regarding various STEM outreach programs and events at Rice. The Assistant Director for Secondary STEM Education administers a program or set of programs and is responsible for devising operational plans to achieve the stated goals and objectives for the program(s). This includes administering key functions such as:

  • Teaching and mentoring teachers and students
  • Development of STEM curriculum
  • Management of programs
  • Observation and assessment of teaching and learning
  • Writing and submission of grant proposals

  • Ideal candidates should have extensive skills and experience in science education, teaching, and pedagogy.

    This position offers a flexible work schedule (minimum of 2 days in the office per week).

    Proposed Annual Hiring Range: $65,000 to $68,000

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree
    • 3+ years of related experience in middle and/or high school science, math, engineering, or computer science classrooms
      • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

    • Adept at problem-solving, creating contingency plans, and handling issues when necessary
    • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail
    • Ability to develop complex or multiple program partnerships and funding sources
    • Knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans

    Preferences:
    • Five years of related experience in middle and/or high school science, math, engineering, or computer science classrooms
    • Experience working in a middle school or high school science, math, engineering, or computer science classroom
    • Experience in leading professional development for teachers at a campus or district level
    • Master's or Ph.D. in a science-related field, science education, or education

    Essential Functions:
    • Develops, implements, administers, and evaluates programs by conducting research activities within the program, analyzing data, creating reports, reviewing trends, and making program improvement recommendations
    • Develops and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding
    • Creates short-term and long-term plans to achieve mission and objectives for the program(s)
    • Devises and manages financial and budgetary plans for the program(s); approves and monitors expenditures
    • For academic programs, may be responsible for graduate student recruitment and admissions, student records, curriculum support, coordinating the accreditation process, managing scholarships and fellowships, and monitoring student progress
    • May be responsible for grant preparation and submission or research administration
    • May teach a course, seminar, or workshop
    • May supervise small staff (up to three full-time staff)
    • Performs all other duties as assigned

    Additional Functions:
    • Manages and analyzes qualitative data such as classroom observations, text comments, and interview notes
    • Teaches using innovative pedagogy, designs and writes curriculum, visits schools, observes, coaches, and assesses teaching
    • Prepares descriptive reports, grant proposals, and evaluation reports with R-STEM staff assistance
    • Manages communication and documentation regarding program personnel
