Staff, Reservoir Engineer - Subsurface Offshore (Finance)

Job Summary

Murphy Oil Corporation is looking for a Staff Reservoir Engineer - Offshore to work operated and non-operated Gulf of America (GOA) deepwater fields for the subsurface development department. The Staff Reservoir Engineer should be a self-starter, comfortable contributing in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. They must have demonstrated experience in maturing drilling, workover, and other opportunities using both analytical and numeric simulation methods. They will also have a demonstrated ability to develop/update depletion plans to maximize asset value while accounting for key uncertainties.

The Staff Reservoir Engineer will need to document results and develop concise supporting presentations to clearly communicate recommendations to management, partners and regulatory authorities on a variety of technical topics. Decline Curve Analysis (DCA), PTA/RTA, PVT Analysis, Nodal Analysis, Material Balance, Reservoir Simulation and Economic Analysis are the key skills required. They should understand how these analyses enhance reservoir characterization and impact reserves/resource estimates.

The Staff Reservoir Engineer may demonstrate a record of varied technical exposure to many global basins and petroleum systems, but a career focus in the Gulf of America is preferred.

The Staff Reservoir Engineer should have a demonstrated ability to work across disciplines including Geology/Geophysics, Production Engineering, Drilling, and Projects.

The Murphy Staff role involves defining the scope of work in alignment with corporate strategy and utilizing cross-functional experience to offer guidance and advice on new opportunities. This position plays a key role in major project evaluations and the implementation of business opportunities. Additionally, it contributes to the selection of company technology and can apply fundamental principles of machine learning/artificial intelligence where appliable.

A mastery of at least one anchor skill is essential for this position, along with consistently delivering technically sound and business-oriented results while collaborating with other functions. The role includes identifying opportunities, advising management, and advancing these opportunities through the appropriate value assurance process across different disciplines. Furthermore, it provides leadership support both internally and externally with partners to achieve alignment in execution.

The role requires strong influencing skills and the ability to clearly communicate technical deliverables needed by team members. It involves developing coaching and mentoring skills to support less experienced colleagues and the ability to convey the team's results to management, recognizing contributions in both written and verbal reports. The position exemplifies professional and ethical behavior for other team members.

The position prioritizes the organization's needs over personal interests, builds trust through honest communication, and uses experience to make reasonable assumptions when data is missing. It handles ambiguous situations constructively, encourages new ideas, identifies opportunities, turns innovations into solutions, and fosters a learning environment from successes and failures.

This role involves expanding technical expertise, identifying transformative business opportunities for Murphy, and inspiring others through innovative ideas and knowledge. The position also requires representing the company externally, building professional networks, and promoting adherence to Murphy's MPVV principles.

The Staff Reservoir Engineer will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to create development plans for deepwater fields that incorporate risks and uncertainties in the development decisions
  • Provide expert guidance when trouble shooting well performance issues and provide recommendations on workover and/or stimulation treatments
  • Expert knowledge of classical reservoir engineering, including material balance, PTA and PVT analyses
  • Build and maintain reservoir models in close collaboration with geoscientists to ensure integration of all relevant data. Advanced reservoir modelling skills and in-depth experience with uncertainty analyses and a combination of hands-on modelling and mentoring of colleagues will be required
  • Ensures team objectives and deliverables adhere to technical standards, and offers leadership and guidance on project deliverables
  • Provides mentorship and advice to team members across multiple teams in areas of expertise, exhibiting mastery in diverse discipline skills
  • Capable of driving projects from initiation to drill readiness within the discipline/function, taking appropriate technical and business risks
  • Interacts effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment, both as a senior contributor and in a lead role, understanding broader organizational objectives and aligning functional goals to achieve these objectives
  • Establishes networks within Murphy and externally, gaining recognition as a significant contributor, and builds extensive networks
  • Contributes to the technical community by presenting real case examples or assisting other teams with specific tasks, representing the team at industry events to seek new ideas and monitor peer trends
  • Develops comprehensive technical skills within a discipline, possessing thorough understanding of technology and its business applications, and exhibits expertise in several core competencies

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Minimum 12 years' experience in Reservoir Engineering, with 5 years' experience with deepwater fields, 5 years' experience in exploration reservoir engineering support, and 10 years' experience with economic assessments, reservoir simulation, network modeling and pressure transient analysis
  • 10 years of experience field development studies and uncertainty analyses
  • Demonstrated experience with tNavigator/Eclipse, PTA/Kappa, PVT/PVTsim, ValNav, Power BI or similar software packages

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 years' experience direct Offshore reservoir engineering experience, GOA deepwater experience is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to thrive in a team environment, placing the team's needs ahead of the individual
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment is essential
